This week, Jennifer Egan came to Davenport to talk about her new and critically acclaimed novel, Manhattan Beach. Egan is the author of five previous books of fiction, and her A Visit from the Goon Squad won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
At Davenport, Egan read an excerpt from the first chapter of Manhattan Beach, signed copies of the book for Davenporters, and discussed her writing and researching process. Egan was eloquent and bright, answering every question posed to her by Head John Witt and the assembled guests with thoughtful honesty! The Davenport Common Room was packed full of eager listeners, all enthralled to hear about how Egan spent years researching and exploring World War II New York in order to bring Manhattan Beach to fruition.
